Winter in Bordeaux: Wine Tours, Quiet Châteaux and Christmas Markets
Stories from wine country
Why winter is a great time for a Bordeaux wine tour: calm châteaux, more time with winemakers, the Christmas market in the city and practical tips for the cold season.
Winter is the quietest season in Bordeaux wine country, and one of the most rewarding. The vines are bare and pruning is under way, but the cellars and tasting rooms are as interesting as ever, with fewer visitors and more time to talk with the people who make the wine. In the city, the Christmas market runs from late November to late December (27 November to 27 December in 2026).
Why visit the vineyards in winter
- Fewer visitors: tastings are calmer and more personal, and you have time to ask questions.
- Life in the vineyard: from December, estates prune the vines and prepare the next season. You see a side of winemaking that summer visitors miss.
- Rich red wines: Bordeaux reds, from the Merlot of Saint-Émilion to the Cabernet of the Médoc, are at their best on a cold day.
- An easier city: Bordeaux is quieter than in summer, which makes restaurants and attractions easier to book.
Which tours suit the cold season
Van tours are the most comfortable option in cold or wet weather:
- Saint-Émilion small-group day, from €165, with tastings and lunch.
- Médoc food and wine day, from €189, three estates and food pairings.
- Saint-Émilion and Médoc day, from €195, both banks in one day.
- A private day, built around your dates and your pace.
Electric bike tours depend on the weather: in case of rain we provide rain jackets and adapt the ride, and in really bad weather the tour can be led by van. Check the dates open for booking on each tour page.
Christmas in Bordeaux
- The Christmas market: wooden chalets, regional products, seasonal treats and mulled wine (vin chaud), from late November to late December. Check the City of Bordeaux website for this year's dates, location and opening hours.
- The city in lights: the historic centre and the banks of the Garonne are lovely for an evening walk.
- La Cité du Vin: the wine museum is a good indoor complement to a day in the vineyards.
Practical tips for a winter wine tour
- Dress in layers: cellars are cool all year, and it is colder outside in the vineyards. See what to wear and bring.
- Book a little ahead around the holidays: Christmas and New Year are popular for gifts and family trips.
- Days are short: tours run in daylight, so enjoy the evening in the city.
